Immune Therapy to Prevent from Cancer Growth and Metastasis

        On October 19, 1994, The New York Times reported nutritional and medicinal values of specialty mushroom in its full page article "The Wild Mushroom: Exotic and Booming". Its say, " Surprisingly, it is shiitakes, among other mushrooms, that are being studied in Japan for their ability to enhance the immune system and prevent diseases. .........Hen of the woods (also called Maitake Mushrooms) has also been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Hen of the woods is used, too, in Japan to fight high blood pressure, diabetes and HIV, the AIDS-causing virus. " It seems that the values of Maitake have now been recognized by many U.S. people, which makes me encouraged as I am one of those who has been involved in the research on the medicinal properties of this intriguing mushroom from the beginning.
        1994年10月19日， 纽约时报以"神奇的野生真菌研究正迅速发展"为题整版篇幅报导了一些特殊真菌的营养和药用价值。它在文中写到："日本的研究结果表明，香菇多糖具有令人惊叹的药理作用，它可以提高人体的免疫力，增强疾病的抵抗能力，而灰树花（也称之为舞茸）则表现出很强的抗癌活性。同时，灰树花在日本也被用于抗高血压、糖尿病、爱滋病以及其他一些引起免疫缺陷的病毒。这表明灰树花的价值已经被许多美国人所承认。因此，作为最早研究这种神奇真菌的工作者之一，我感到非常的荣幸。
       I have been studying medicinal mushrooms for the last 15 years and have reported that, of all mushrooms studied, Maitake Mushroom (Grifola frondosa) has the strongest anti-tumor activity in tumor growth inhibition when administered both orally and intraperitoneally. Table 1 gives the results of test of cancer inhibition rates on mice bearing MM 46 (breast cancer). The mice were bred for one month with foods which were made of 20% Maitake powder. The result was that Maitake outperformed all other mushrooms. Through the 31 day oral administration, total remission of the tumor was visibly confirmed on four out of ten Maitake fed mice. The remainingsix rodents also indicated almost 90% suppression rate compared to untreated (control) mice. This is one of the reasons why Maitake is called King among others. In fact, most other mushroom extract are reported ineffective when given orally. In this report, it is investigated that Maitake is effective not only on the inhibition against tumors already growing, but also on the inhibition of carcinogenesis and formation of the secondary focus due to metastasis of tumor cells in lymph and/or blood.

       我从事真菌研究领域15年的研究发现，无论是口服还是腹腔给药，灰树花都具有最强的肿瘤抑制效果。如表一所示：荷瘤（乳腺癌MM46）小鼠的抑瘤率统计中，小鼠经含有20%的灰树花粉灌喂一个月的抑瘤率超过了实验中所用的其他真菌。经过31天的口服灌喂灰树花粉，有十分之四的小鼠肿块完全消失，剩余的6只小鼠相对于对照组也表现出90%的抑制率。正因为如此，灰树花被称之为抗癌菌中之王。事实上，其他的许多的真菌在口服给药时是没有抗癌作用的。然而，本文的研究表明，灰树花不仅可以抑制肿块的生长，而且，可以抑制原发性的肿瘤发生以及肿瘤细胞通过淋巴和血液的转移。
